By now, we are finally getting used to the time change! We visited Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has 19 authentic windmills and their are still ‘millers’ that live in them!
From Kinderdijk, we took a boat ride to Rotterdam. Rotterdam is a fairly new city since it was bombed in WWII and had to rebuild from the ground up. The Nazi’s wanted access to the valuable port so bombed the city. After WWII, there was a period of rapid and haphazard development. Rotterdam is seen as the ‘business hub’ of the Netherlands.
Next we visited Amsterdam, which is seen as the cultural heart of the country. I noticed the transportation system was very different than at home. Where I grew up, transportation is mainly geared to cars but in Amsterdam transportation is geared to bikes, trams, pedestrians, and cars!
Pictures couldn’t quite capture everything but I have been trying my best! I have been having a lot of fun and we will be visiting some farms in the next couple days.
