By just looking down from the airplane, I was amazed by the magnificent Karst topology.
I live in the province that is right next to Gui Zhou Province, and the geological character is totally different.
On the way to the site, the road is surrounded by “cone” shape mountains, the mountains and the man-made structure looks like a landscape garden itself.
After two hours of car ride from the Guiyang airport, we finally got to the University city. The car finally stops by a small road and we are being told to carry our suitcase to the mountain next to the road. I gotta say it was exhausting.
Mr. Song decided to show us the work he has done for the last twenty years. During the tour, he told us his future plan about every corner of the site and hoping we can come out a design that inherits that identity rather than imitation.
He also told us his story. After coming back from a trip to the US in 1994, Mr. Song decides to create an art piece with the local residents to commemorate the history of the land he grew up. He was 56 years old when he made that decision, and this is how it looks like after 20 years.
The site itself was a tourist spot on the border of the University City, it has helped the establishment of many restaurants and “computer bar”(something I have never seen in the US). Due to the expansion of the university, the school wants to buy off the mountain and build more dormitory, and Mr. Song turned them down. So the University set up a gate to block students from going there. The business along the street all forced to moved out. Ye Lang valley is also in danger because of the source of income is reduced. Moreover, the University has discharge contaminated construction water to the river that runs through the valley. It has caused serious sensual problem.
