El Centro Historico

June 16, 2018 by Darah Bagby-Prosser Leave a Comment

An area me and my friends like to hang out at is El Centro Historico. It is basically where Oaxaca City started before it grew into what it is today. In the beginning the city was centered around the Santa Domingo Church. During the colonial period, the city experienced major development due to the export of gold, and cochineal (the red dye made from insects). Walking through El Centro the area looks completely different from the city. It is kind of like you are stuck in the past when you look at the designs of the streets and buildings. However, it is still very lively with its markets, bands and fireworks.
