We are now about half-way through our first week here in Athens, Greece. Today has by far been my favorite class and learning opportunity. Our day started off with an hour bus ride into Athens; to work with a group called Organization Earth. Organization Earth is a greek non-profit non-governmental organization founded in 2010. Their mission is: the development of the concept of environmental & social intelligence, by providing experiential, non-formal education for sustainable development for all ages, introducing key sustainability issues into everyday life, primarily through learning activities. During the day we took a tour of the property’s Organic Garden, and we learned about sustainable agriculture. Throughout the tour our guide provided us information about how organic farming relies on composting and a self-regulating ecosystem. A specific example was the “bug hotel” that gave habitat to many different types of insects which helped pollinate crops as well as kill off other insects that potentially posed a threat to the crops. After the tour we participated in a 5-hour Collective Kitchen project with the Center of Earth, Ilion, Athens. We prepared around 200 food packages for individuals who were in vulnerable social groups throughout Athens. Throughout my images posted below you will find pictures of the Organic Garden, as well as an image of the meal that we prepared for ourselves and the Center of the Earth,Ilion, Athens. This was my favorite part of the day because we got to give back to a community that really needed help and support an organization that works tirelessly everyday to make a difference. By the end of our day we were all exhausted and slept on the bus ride home. This day was so amazing and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the week has to offer us.
