The second day

July 18, 2018 by Shiyue Zhao Leave a Comment

Today is Jul 17th, the second day of my program. After settling down, and struggling with the hot and moisture weather, I experienced the first real ocean dive in my entire life. The dive location was Cumber & Meadows, which are the most conserved reef diving sites in the whole world. I am afraid this starting point is a little bit too high and will spoil me, so that when I dive in other locations, I may not feel as such exited as today was.

We dove about 50 ft in depth and the visibility was about 30 meters which was very clear. So, every inch of the beautiful coral reef was under my sight. I was glad to see vivid marine creatures swim in the conserved coral reefs. The magnificence and the pageantry collided into my sights, and I felt such respectful for it. It was just like watching a high-quality documentary, but I was inside that documentary and there was no background music. During the dives, we saw one nurse shark and one reef shark and also a couple of rays, which I was really exited to encounter with. The dives were such a wonderful experience.

In the afternoon we were given coral reef identification lecture and studied to identify 31 corals. After the identification course, we went out snorkeling to see them in the real environment. However, I got sick and felt like throwing up on the corals anytime. Although my vomitus would just be fish food, I still felt kind of gross even just imagine that. I first thought I was dehydrated or exposed to too much sunlight, then I realize that it is just motion sickness caused by the waves. It is a long day but I learned a lot and very grateful for this experience.
