Day 1 in Belize: Sunday 5/25

June 10, 2019 by Sofia Fernandes Leave a Comment

  • My first breakfast! The bread-looking things are called fry jacks and are a delicious, fried alternative to toast! The jam is plum jam which was always served with toast or fry jacks and is DELICIOUS.
  • just a little hammock break before lunch…(looks relaxing but in reality I was just anticipating crashing to the ground)
  • At Guava Limb restaurant, I tried this delicious juice made from boiled flowers and sugar!
  • where we stayed 🙂

Our afternoon trip to the Mayan ruins at Xunantunich

  • we were told that we had to ride a ferry. imagine our surprise when this was it…
  • i guess sitting 2 feet from the edge of a ruin that is hundreds of feet in the air is funny…

This sounds cheesy and almost like I am lying but there was this strange peacefulness at Xunantunich. It was almost surreal…almost like the Mayans appreciated that we were there learning about them. It was truly an unforgettable experience climbing up and down these ruins as our guide told us about the mysteriously-advanced people who once lived there.

The silence was interrupted at one point though – by a group of howler monkeys in some trees surrounding the site.

Dinner at the popular restaurant 100 feet from our resort (Hode’s)

  • it took a lot of courage to give my order to the waiter for obvious reasons.

Even though it had only been one full day, I already felt like I was home. I could not wait to see what the the remainder of my adventure had in store for me.
