Market Day

July 12, 2019 by Ethan Witherup Leave a Comment

On June 16th, our last day in Berlin, it was a Sunday and having nothing to do on our day off my friends and I decided to check out a market with stands set up just for that day. Hearing that there was an event with tons of stalls and stores open was a big surprise because in Germany everything is closed on Sunday. Every grocery store, department store, and the mall is closed on Sunday except a few restaurants and 24 hour stores. So it was a real treat exploring all the stands walking among the people. We found thrift stands that had everything for sale from half pieced together mannequins to camera’s from the 70’s and anything in between. We found a stand that sold custom stamps, one that sold toys, and one that even sold custom boomerangs. And Everywhere they were selling clothes and jewelry. At the end of the day I walked away with two bracelets and a copy of David Copperfield, in English, with a quote written in German as a bookmark from the stand owner reading, “Alles entscheidende geschieht trotzdem” which translates to “Everything decisive happens anyway”.

Having left the marketplace we came across a filled outdoor stone amphitheater, the only time I saw anyone there, with the crowd expectantly watching a British street performer. His act consisted of getting volunteers from the audience to hold up a tightrope for him as he balanced on it while juggling flaming batons. The stunt was entertaining enough but his jokes with the audience and volunteers was entertaining enough. After the stunt he explained how he travels the world performing and has been doing it for over 20 years. All in all, it made for an interesting Sunday.
