Week 1 part 2

July 14, 2019 by Valerie Collado Leave a Comment

My first week in Belize went by extremely fast! On Tuesday we got to vaccinate some cattle and do physical exams on horses. We even got to witness a castration which was crazy! On Wednesday we visited a veterinary diagnostics laboratory (the only one in Belize), and on Thursday we visited a dairy farm where I got to milk a cow.

Friday we were able to vaccinate and do more physical exams on some horses which we got to ride afterwards! It was a bit horrifying though to find out that these horses were infested with ticks! Fortunately, there is no Lyme disease in Belize, but I can imagine it was uncomfortable for the horses. Hopefully the dewormer we gave them helped! After we took a ride on the horses, we ate! The equestrian trail also had a restaurant with a beautiful view and plenty of little hummingbirds flying around, it truly felt magical!

Saturday we had the spay/neuter clinic and it was probably the most hectic day of the whole trip! Despite the craziness it was a lot of fun! On top of that, the clinic was free for anyone who brought their animal so helping the clients and their pets was definitely worth the it! I could definitely tell that, over the years, Dr. T’s has made an impact on the community and their knowledge about the importance of spaying/neutering their pets. We got to check the heart rate, weight, administer dewormer to many dogs and a few cats. We also assisted in the surgeries and sutured the dogs/cats up afterwards, it’s crazy how much students can do here! The clinic was a great way to end the week.
