Reflection on My Yucatán Expedition

March 23, 2019 by Jeremy Lewan 3 Comments

After just returning from Mexico yesterday, I am having Yucatán withdrawal. Just 48 hours ago, I was snorkeling along the coastal coral reefs in Puerto Morelos. It was 88 degrees. It is 43 degrees here. 🙁               The snorkeling expedition was awesome. There stretched miles of dazzling coral forests […]

Mangroves, Flamingos, and Meeting Lupita!

March 20, 2019 by Jeremy Lewan 2 Comments

We’re in the last days of our trip here in the Yucatán! After our stay in Valladolid, we made our way to Río Lagartos, a coastal city on the Gulf of Mexico. Río Lagartos has a very important ecosystem: the mangrove. The are different variations of mangrove present here, including black, white, and the most common, […]

Chichen Itzá, Jumping in a Cenote, and a Biocultural Reserve!

March 18, 2019 by Jeremy Lewan 3 Comments

This has been an amazing past few days! After a quick visit to Maní to see a traditional Mexican Sunday mass, we were off to La Reserva Biocultural de Kaxil Kiuic (pronounced “Kashil Kooeek“). “Kax” in Mayan means forest and “Kiuic” means a place to come together. Click to see a traditional Sunday Mass in […]

Visit to Uxmal, Mérida, and a Hacienda!

March 17, 2019 by Jeremy Lewan 2 Comments

Hey everyone! So happy to report that I’m very much enjoying 96° weather! Mexico has been awesome. There is a rich diversity in Mexican culture: 62 different pre-hispanic ethnic groups and 62 different languages exist here. To follow up with my previous hope, I have not tried the traditional Mexico chocolate mole. I learned that the […]

Pre-Departure to the Yucatán!

March 15, 2019 by Jeremy Lewan 1 Comment

Hi everyone! I am currently in Houston’s George Bush International Airport. We have a 3 hour layover here until we board our plane to Mérida. I didn’t finish packing until 3AM last night because I had a paper to finish up for my Honors College Forum Mission Course. So I took a (much-needed) nap on the […]

About Jeremy Lewan

Photo of Jeremy Lewan.

My name is Jeremy Lewan and I am currently a Freshman Meteorology Major in the Honors College. I am looking forward with great excitement and anticipation to participating in the 2019 Honors Embedded Spring Program involving the study of the coral reefs off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. As an aspiring future broadcast meteorologist, I want to know everything there is to know about the impact of climate change on this specific part of the environment. I am also very excited to be immersed in Spanish culture and heritage in Mexico and practice my Spanish with locals. In addition to travelling, I enjoy bike riding, hiking, geocaching, swimming, photography, and videography. I can't wait for all the experiences Rutgers has to offer over the next four years!
