What Thailand Taught Me

June 30, 2019 by Karina Bahshiyants 1 Comment

For someone who enjoys her routine more than anything, I will never regret packing my bags and traveling to Thailand. Adjusting to a new environment and people was not easy and it’s something I didn’t feel comfortable doing because it required me to get out of my comfort zone. Studying and learning about not only […]

Saying Goodbye

June 28, 2019 by Karina Bahshiyants Leave a Comment

Today was our last day volunteering at the Mahasawat Health Promotion Clinic. Our day began very early as usual, and we did rotations with the nurse, doctor, and pharmacist in the morning until noon. It still amazes me how much the communities in these villages rely on this clinic for getting all the treatment they […]

Learning About Life in The Villages

For the last couple of days we’ve been making home visits with public health volunteers and workers. We had the opportunity to learn about the way of life in the villages. Many people there are mostly farmers and so healthcare workers come around every few months to do finger prick tests in order to test […]

Today we took a trip to our first volunteer site in Bangkok. The Mahasawat Health Promotion Hospital is conveniently located close to the villages and provides a variety of services to the community. We met the chief board director who helps run these organizations and all the volunteers, nurses, and professionals involved. This hospital focuses […]

Preparation for Thailand

June 2, 2019 by Karina Bahshiyants Leave a Comment

In less than 2 weeks, I will be embarking on a journey I never thought I’d be able to take part in. I’ve been trying to mentally prepare myself for this trip ever since I made the final decision to go. Although I am a little anxious, I know that this experience is crucial for […]

About Karina Bahshiyants

Photo of Karina Bahshiyants.

Hi my name is Karina and I am a senior studying Nutritional Sciences. I was born and raised in Uzbekistan, and have lived in the U.S. for 13 years now. My last year here at Rutgers has been the most fulfilling because I was always interested in healthcare and recently decided to learn more about Public Health. I discovered the importance of research, disease prevention, health education, epidemiology, and community work. This summer I am very excited to participate in the Tensions and Transformations in Southeast Asia Program in Bangkok, Thailand. This program will provide me with the knowledge and experience I need to learn about public healthcare systems, community outreach, volunteer work, and culture appreciation. I cannot wait to embark on this journey and jump start on my studies and understanding of Public Health.
