Day 13

August 3, 2019 by Sarah Malarkey Leave a Comment

We ended our last day in Bangkok with a presentation to our hospital about our experiences in Thailand. We talked about the prominent healthcare issues that we saw such as poor dental health, obesity, diabetes, stroke, and motorcycle accidents. We thanked our worksite for being so generous and taking care us throughout our entire trip. […]

Day 12

August 3, 2019 by Sarah Malarkey Leave a Comment

Our worksite gave us a traditional Thai farewell by making us a bunch of signature Thai dishes. One of the employees stayed up until 2 AM cooking us all the food, and all her hard worked showed. The display and plating of the food was beautiful, and the food tasted delicious. The employees taught us […]

Day 11

We returned back to the school to teach the students English. This is the first time that the students are hearing English with an American accent. We were told that many of the teachers cannot properly pronounce some of the words, so sometimes the kids learn the wrong pronunciation. Also, the children learn English from […]

Day 10

We had more home visits today of patients who both were victims of motorcycle accidents. Again, it was emphasized how prominent motorcycle accidents are in Thailand, and how debilitating they can be. We went to the local school to give a physical exam to the children. We measured their height and weight, gave them […]

Day 8-9

August 3, 2019 by Sarah Malarkey Leave a Comment

We had an amazing time in Chiang Mai! It was a nice (and much needed) change of pace. Chiang Mai is definitely less chaotic than Bangkok, and certainly has way more temples. It was also brutally hot while we were there. The weather app said it was 100 degrees Fahrenheit but felt like 113. However, […]

Day 7

August 3, 2019 by Sarah Malarkey Leave a Comment

We visited Ayutthaya which was the capital of the Kingdom of Siam before the Burmese burned it down. It is very beautiful even though not much is left behind. We were able to buy some snacks and souvenirs in the local market before we left. Afterwards, we headed back to the hotel, and majority of […]

About Sarah Malarkey

Photo of Sarah Malarkey.

Hi everyone, my name is Sarah Malarkey and I am a rising senior in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences and Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy. After I graduate, I hope to attend graduate school to receive my MPH degree. My ultimate goal is to become a doctor; I aspire to combine my passion for social justice and healthcare inequalities with my medical career and work with underserved and underrepresented populations. I am super excited to be traveling to Thailand this summer to learn about their healthcare system! I have had the opportunity to learn about health disparities in the United States, and how our culture influences our health and well-being. However, I would love to see how Thai culture influences the populations health, and how healthcare is delivered. Though it is important to learn about public health issues in the classroom, it is more important to be to apply my knowledge outside of the classroom in order to enhance my understanding of the material.
