  1. African Conservation Experience: Shimongwe Wildlife Veterinary Experience »

    For 2-4 weeks students work with wildlife vets in South Africa both in the field and clinic to gain exposure to issues surrounding the protection of rare and endangered species in Africa. They participate in the treating and handling of wildlife from collecting blood samples to capturing and relocating animals. Over the duration of this program, students also participate in medical work on sick and injured wildlife while learning about disease control and how to use veterinary drugs. Students work with a range of animals including buffalo, rhino, roan, sable, nyala, eland, and bushbuck.   7. Embedded Spring: Honors Yucatan »

    While spending one week in Merida, Mexico, students understand the importance of coral reef ecosystems through visits to the Caribbean coast and other visits to ecological preserves. They also investigate the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Uxmal and Chichen Itza, ancient Maya cities of the Yucatan. By visiting colonial cities such as Valladolid and Merida, students learn about their history, people and culture.
  8. Food and Sustainability in Thailand »

    During 2 weeks in Thailand, students explore food sustainability, food security, and food safety across Thailand to the locations of three Mahidol University campuses: Salaya, Bangkok, and Kanchanaburi. Students are exposed to everyday life there, experiencing the rich Thai culture across these rural and urban landscapes from over 2500 years of tradition, in addition to food pathways from farm to table.
  9. G.R.E.E.N. Program: Renewable Energy and Sustainability in Iceland »

    Through the GREEN Program and Iceland School of Energy of Reykjavik University, students experience a world of sustainability, hydro power, geology, and bio-fuels. They attend lectures at Reykjavik University to learn more about the unique position of Iceland in renewable energy research and practice and finish off their course with a group capstone project for credit. Outside of the classroom, students attend field trips to various hydro, geothermal, and bio fuel plants to see sustainability practices in action. Other excursions include visits to some of Iceland's most famous glaciers and volcanoes.

  14. MABS-Spanish Food Culture: Mediterranean Diet & the Agrifood Industry »

    While spending 4 weeks in Zaragoza, Spain, students learn about the value chain for Mediterranean products from experts and discover Spain's dynamic food industry through its wine, olive oil, seafood, fruits & vegetables, and gastronomy through case studies, field trips, and technical visits. Students also take Spanish language and culture lessons and experience the social dimension of Spanish food culture. After the 4-week program, students can choose to do a 4-week optional internship in the Spanish agrifood industry.
  15. Purpan School of Agriculture »

    This summer program in Purpan combines on-campus coursework with off-campus internships in farming or agribusiness to teach students more about agriculture in France and Europe. Coursework lasts the month of June. Part one consists of learning about culture, agriculture, and animal chains. For part two, students choose between studying crop production and food processing or viticulture and enology. Internships last the month of July, and past internships have taken place in animal production, plant production, vineyards, and agrotourism.   16. Rutgers CCMI Coral Reef Internship in Little Cayman »

    This summer program running from July to the beginning of August provides students invaluable field experience in Little Cayman Island through living and studying at the Central Caribbean Marine Institute's tropical field station, the Little Cayman Research Centre. The program involves dive trips, field trips to marine protected areas and replenishment zones, training in field methods, lab and field work with research staff, lectures and discussions, and data collection and analysis.   17. Rutgers-Culture and Community Health in Oaxaca, Mexico »

    Led by SEBS faculty member, Dr. Peter Guarnaccia, students in this program learn about and participate in community-based healthcare systems in Oaxaca, Mexico. Students discover the culture of Oaxaca through homestays, excursions, and intensive Spanish courses. At the end of the program, students obtain 3 credits of Community Health Seminar as well as 3 credits of Medical Spanish.     In this program led by Rutgers professor Dr. Erin Vogel, students gain hands-on experience studying wildlife conservation in Indonesia. Split into two courses, students spend the first half of this program on the island of Borneo, collecting data on wild orangutans and their habitats. The second course takes place in Ujung Kulon National Park and covers a broader image of the current conservation issues Indonesia faces. Students will learn about environmental policy and ecosystem management, helping them analyze the intricacies of conservation more critically.
  23. Rutgers-Women's Rights and Community Service Learning in Ghana »

    This International Service Learning program was a 5-week program held in the Summer of 2016 and led by Rutgers faculty member, Dr. Walter Rucker. The program was multidisciplinary, with emphasis on pre and post-colonial Ghanian history, society, culture, and women's rights and learning took place through readings, discussions, seminars, and site visits throughout Ghana.   24. SIT: Iceland-Renewable Energy, Technology, and Resource Economics »

    This 7-week program takes students to various cities across Iceland to learn about how energy is used there. In addition to homestays, culture and language courses, and various excursions, students' coursework focuses on recent research in the fields of renewable energy, technology, and resources economics. Each student researches a specific field study component which they will present in an academic paper as well as in front of their class.   25. Tel Aviv University Summer Research Program in the Sciences »

    During 8 weeks, students have hands-on experience by participating in research projects under the supervision of experienced scientists at Tal Aviv University in Israel. The experience culminates with a Final Symposium where each student presents his/her research to faculty and team members. In addition to coursework, students enjoy cultural activities around the country, such as the Dead Sea and Jerusalem.

  27. University of Washington: Landscape Architecture in Guiyang, China »

    The University of Washington offers a unique summer program to study landscape architecture in an ethnic minority village near Qianxi City, Guizhou Province. Students partner with others from Normal University Guiyang to help on their team project which will impact the local community. Together, students design and construct landscape elements and learn about craft, design, construction drawing document, materiality, and field sketching. What Is This? Who Are They?

This blog is home to the thoughts and images of Rutgers University students as they travel the world this summer. Each student received a scholarship to experience the sciences beyond their New Jersey borders. In addition to the research and/or coursework, they will keep a journal or blog. Their thoughts are recorded once or twice a week over the duration of their international experience.
